CW: Please provide some background on Supreme Paints and Coatings. When was the company founded? Where is it located?

Cobb: Our company was founded in 2012. We are headquartered in Melville on Long Island in New York. Our products are all proudly made in the USA and  shipped to our customers throughout the U.S.

CW: What types of paint and coatings do you manufacture?

Cobb: We specialize in high end, high solids Epoxy paints for swimming pools as well as for garage floors, warehouses, shop floors, wood surfaces and more.

CW: What are the main markets for your products?

Cobb: We supply our products to customers throughout the U.S. Covering the industrial and residential markets. Our products are used in everything from airline hangers, manufacturing facilities, shop floors, etc. We also serve residential customers that are looking for a high-end alternative to the more generic products found in box stores. We have a strong share of the residential market with products such as our Platinum Ultra Epoxy Pool Paint for swimming pools and our Epoxy Zenith Industrial Coating for garages.

CW: What are your customers looking for in terms of performance?

Cobb: The customers that choose our brand are looking for more of a higher end coating as opposed to the generic products that are found in box stores. Our formulations are made with premium quality raw materials resulting in longer lasting applications with the ability to withstand heavy use in high traffic areas, such as warehouses and garages and also the ability to withstand extreme temperatures and chemical resistance in swimming pools.

For customers considering whether to repaint or replaster their pool, Platinum Ultra 2 Part Epoxy Pool Paint offers customers several advantages:

1. Higher Solids = High Performance

When in the market for Epoxy paints whether they are intended for application on a swimming pool, garage, roof, basement, deck or warehouse one of the main things to look for in the formulation is the solids content. The higher the solids the better thee􀆯icacy of the coating will be. Most pool paints in box stores fall in the range of 50 to 75 percent solids. The range to look for is a product that is at least above 80 but preferably in the range of 90 to 93 percent solids. The higher the solids percentage the purer the Epoxy will be. This helps with bonding, color retention as well as uv and chemical resistance. We find that 90 to 93 percent is the right balance between solids, easy roll out and thickness for a homeowner friendly DIY application.

2. Cost Effectiveness

A common myth or misconception is that if a pool is stained and has some cracks, breaks or holes in its foundation that it needs to be completely refurbished with poured concrete, plaster or fiberglass. As an example, the average cost to replaster a pool currently ranges anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 depending on the pool size. In contrast the average cost of materials to recoat with a good quality Epoxy Pool Paint ranges from $800 to $2000 depending on the size of the pool. And it is also a do-it-yourself application with no labor costs or professional assistance needed. As long as the substrate is not completely crumbling in large chunks then applying a high solids 2 Part Epoxy Pool Paint is a cost-effective alternative offering a similar life span, durability and aesthetic beauty at an absolute fraction of the cost.

3. To Prime or Not To Prime

Many doing research on different types of pool paints will find several products that require the purchase of a primer before applying the material at an additional cost. A primer is only needed when the paint or epoxy coating is not strong enough to adhere to or bond on its own. When an epoxy pool paint is formulated the correct way with the right amount of solids and bonding agents the product will bond to both a bare substrate or any existing coating without the need for a primer. As a matter of fact applying a primer underneath a high end epoxy pool paint can actually be counter productive because if the lower quality primer should eventually fail then it can affect any coating that will be applied over the top of it.

4. Proper Surface Prep is Key

Priming is not to be confused with prepping a pool. Surface preparation of a swimming pool is absolutely key to achieving proper product performance regardless of the quality of the pool paint you are using. Proper prep involves cleaning the pool with a mixture of50 percent water and 50 percent muriatic acid and then following up with a cleaning mixture of TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) and water. If there are any cracks, breaks or holes in the substrate it is then advised to patch the imperfections using a quick drying hydraulic cement if it’s a concrete or gunite pool, a plaster patch for plaster pools or fiberglass patch for a fiberglass pool. After these steps the pool is then ready for painting.

In closing unless a swimming pool surface is crumbling up in pieces or breaking off in large chunks, using a high-end product such as the Platinum Ultra Epoxy Pool Paint is a much more cost-effective alternative to replastering, installing new fiberglass or pouring new concrete. A product like Platinum Ultra provides similar durability, aesthetic beauty and life span at an absolute fraction of the cost.

CW: What sets your company apart from the competition?

Cobb: We are proud of the fact that we have not altered our formulations or taken any shortcuts that would sacrifice our product quality in any way. Not just to process orders but to answer any questions our clients may have whether it is helping with square footage to figure out how much product is needed, as well as the best steps to take regarding surface prep and application questions. Our aim is to help make the whole process as painless as possible for our customers starting with the initial contact until project completion.

CW: What are your company’s plans for the long-term?
